Hair Transplant

In a hair transplant, healthy hair follicles are taken from a donor area and transplanted to a recipient site that is thinning or balding. The procedure does not generate new follicles and so the quality and quantity of the donor hair is known by the coverage. Before providing hair surgery, Hair Transplant Islamabad’s Dr Adnan Bashir conducts a thorough examination of the patient’s hair loss, health of the scalp, density, thickness, and the expected amount of thinning.

Best Donor Area for Hair Transplants Surgery

The areas of donor hair are the back and sides of the scalp. In the event that the donor supply for the scald’s hair is not adequate, additional grafts may be taken from beard and body hair.

Hair transplant donor area Common use Important consideration
Back of the scalp Hairline, mid-scalp and crown Usually provides the most stable follicles
Sides of the scalp Additional scalp coverage Harvesting must remain inside the safe donor zone
Beard Crown, mid-scalp and repair procedures Hair is often thicker than scalp hair
Chest Additional coverage Growth length and texture can differ
Other body areas Selected corrective cases Graft survival can be less predictable

Scalp Donor Area ( Back & Sides of the Head )

The primary scalp donor site is the occipital (back of the head) region. Healthy follicular units may also be chosen from temporal areas of the scalp located above the ears.

These areas are considered the safe donor zone by the surgeons. In many patients with androgenetic alopecia, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for pattern hair loss, is less effective in this area.

The scalp hair will typically be the first choice as it is close to the hair of the person:

  • Hair colour and shaft thickness
  • Texture, curl and growth length.
  • Follicular growth cycle
  • Hairs per follicular unit.
  • Appearance after transplantation

Single hair grafts are normally applied along your frontal hairline to create a soft transition. Two or more hairs can be used in grafts to increase visual density mid-scalp and crown.

Beard Donor Hair for Scalp Transplants

When there are limited follicles in the scalp donor area, then the donor hair from the beard can be used to complement the scalp grafts. Typically, hair is removed from under the chin or upper neck with follicular unit extraction (FUE).

Hair on the beard tends to be thicker and coarser than that of the scalp. This can help to add density to the crown or mid-scalp.

However, beard follicles rarely are adequate for making an entire frontal line. When beard hair is contrasted with finer hair on the scalp, differences in curl, calibre, colour and growth pattern can make beard hair noticeable.

Dr. Adnan Bashir can combine beard grafts with the hair follicles on the scalp to give a more balanced look. Extraction should also be distributed around the jaw for even growth so that there is no visible thinning under the jaw.

Chest & Body Hair Transplant Donor Area

For certain patients who have limited donor reserves on their scalp and beard, body hair transplantation may be an option. Chest is the area of the body donor most often used but sometimes follicles can be taken from the abdomen, shoulders, back, arms or legs.

There are a number of differences between body hair and scalp hair:

  • May have a shorter growth period
  • You might not be able to have as long hair as you would like
  • Texture and curl can be different
  • Follicles sometimes produce single hair.
  • There is a range of graft survival between patients.

Because of that, body hair is most frequently employed to support, but not to define, a frontal hairline. Its application can provide coverage for the mid-scalp, crown, previous failed area, or scars.

Hair Transplant Donor Area Assessment

A donor site check is a measurement more than just the number of available grafts. The appearance and longevity of these follicles is also important.

Dr. Adnan Bashir reviews the following factors during a hair transplant evaluation:

  • Cause and stage of hair loss
  • Family history of progressive baldness
  • Donor hair density
  • Hair shaft thickness
  • Scalp miniaturization
  • Hair colour and skin contrast
  • Previous transplant procedures
  • Scalp laxity when FUT is being considered
  • Signs of inflammation, infection, or scarring

Diffuse unpatterned alopecia, over-harvested extensively, patients with active scarring alopecia, scalp disease and low hair density may not be candidates for surgery. Prior to discussing graft numbers, the underly

ing condition must first be identified.

FUE Vs FUT Donor Hair Extraction

In FUE individual follicular units are extracted with a small surgical punch. Multiple small, circular scars are left on the donor site. Which can raise questions about what happened to donor area after hair transplant and how it heals over time.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) involves removing a thin strip of the back of the head. The strip is cut into sections and leaves a linear scar which is normally hidden by the surrounding hair.

Donor Extraction Method Main Advantage Type of Scarring
FUE hair transplant Individual graft extraction without removing a strip Small circular scars
FUT hair transplant Can provide many scalp grafts from a defined area Linear donor scar

The FUE or FUT is not scarless. The type of procedure required is dependent on the following: donor hair density, laxity of the scalp, number of grafts needed, prior surgical procedures, desired hair style, and the risk of further hair loss.

Protecting the Safe Donor Zone

There is a limited supply of donor hair. If too many grafts are removed, these can result in permanent thinning, prominent gaps, irregular density and moth eaten appearance.

A lot of grafts are not necessarily a good thing for a hair transplant. Management of donor hair will be a balance of hair to cover and preserve follicles for future procedures.

At Hair Transplant Islamabad, Dr. Adnan Bashir, who is an ABHRS Diplomate, employs a conservative approach. Each surgical plan considers donor density, recipient area size, hairline design, facial proportions, hair characteristics, and the possible progression of androgenetic alopecia.
