The donor area is the area of the scalp where healthy hair follicles are taken during a hair transplant. It is typically on the back and sides of the head since these areas of hair are much harder to bald.
Recovery of the donor area after hair transplant is crucial for ensuring a comfortable recovery and a natural-looking result. It is common for the skin to turn red, feel tender, itch and form small scabs during the early healing phase. Aftercare advice is provided to patients at Hair Transplant in Islamabad and throughout Pakistan, depending on the type of transplant, the condition of the scalp and the number of grafts removed.
How Is Hair Removed from the Donor Area?
The donor area healing process depends partly on the technique used for the procedure.
In an FUE hair transplant, each follicular unit is removed from the donor area by using small punched holes. Such extractions usually heal on their own. May leave small mottled marks that tend to be hard to see once the rest of the hair grows.
In an FUT hair transplant, the surgeon will extract a narrow strip of hair bearing tissue. The incision is sutured together and stapled closed. Recovery from this procedure is typically longer and a thin linear scar is left.
Before deciding on which procedure is appropriate, your surgeon should review your hair density, the health of your scalp and potential hair loss.
Donor Area Recovery Phase
Each patient recuperates at a distinct rate. The following time line is a general picture of what can occur following hair transplant surgery.
| Recovery Period | What You May Notice | Recommended Care |
| First 24 to 48 hours | Redness, tenderness or mild fluid leakage | Protect the scalp and follow prescribed care |
| Days 3 to 7 | Small scabs, itching and tightness | Begin gentle washing if approved |
| Days 7 to 14 | Scabs start falling naturally | Do not scratch or pick the scalp |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Redness and sensitivity improve | Resume activities after medical clearance |
| Months 1 to 3 | Uneven growth or temporary shock loss | Attend scheduled follow-up visits |
| Months 3 to 6 | Donor hair looks fuller and more even | Continue normal scalp care |
How To Care of the Donor Area?
Always follow your surgeon’s instructions. Depending on the type of surgery and your body’s reaction to it, the aftercare could differ.
The general hair transplant aftercare might involve:
- Take prescribed medicines at the correct time.
- Maintain cleanliness of the donor area while healing.
- Only use a shampoo or cleanser recommended by the surgeon.
- Use light water pressure and gentle hand movements to wash.
- Avoid rubbing, scratching or picking at scabs.
- If told to do so, keep your head slightly raised when resting.
- Don’t keep in direct sunlight, dust or too much heat.
- Not wear caps or helmets without permission.
- Take prescribed medicines at the correct time.
- Don’t do strenuous exercise until your surgeon says it’s OK.
Never put oil, dye, gel, sprays or homemade remedies on the healing area unless they have been approved by your doctor.
How to Deal With Donor Area Itching and Scabs
- Itching is normal at the donor site. The small extraction sites may also be dry or tight because of the closing.
- Don’t scratch the donor area. Scratching may re-open the skin, lead to blood loss and make the animal more susceptible to infection. If the itching is severe or accompanied by a rash, talk to the clinic.
After FUE hair transplant procedure, there should be small scabs. Allow them to relax and drop as they will. Peeling scabs early can irritate the skin, resulting in a slower healing process.
Redness, Tenderness & Temporary Numbness
The redness in the donor area usually clears up within 1 to 2 weeks. It may show up longer in those who have light skinned or sensitive skin. There is also some tenderness and temporary numbness. These symptoms will slowly improve, not get worse.
The donor area will appear uneven right after surgery, since the hair has been cut and follicles have been taken out. As the environment grows its hair, it typically looks more balanced.
Understand Donor Area Shock Loss
- A small amount of shedding occurs around the extraction sites for a few days in some patients. This is referred to as donor area shock loss.
- Shock loss can occur due to the response of neighbouring follicles to the stress of surgery. Over the next few months, the affected hair will grow again.
- But if the thinning is continuing, it should be evaluated by the surgeon.
- A proper exam will determine if the loss is temporary shock or if it may be a case of overharvesting.
Why Donor Area Planning Is Important?
There are only a few (limited) follicles in the donor area. Removal of a follicle does not regenerate in the exact area it was removed.
Overharvesting by the donor refers to when too many follicles are taken out or when they are not taken out an even number. May result in noticeable scarring, patchiness and thinning.
Careful donor hair management considers:
- Current donor-area density
- The density and the texture of the hair.
- Scalp flexibility
- Existing hair-loss pattern
- Possible future hair loss
- The maximum number of grafts allowed in the available space.
- Previous hair transplant procedures
